Due to last minute work travel arrangments I won't be able to attend tonight's session. Curses!

That a shame Dave. Still, glad you can make it, Ciaran. Be interested in your opinions.

I'll tell you what I thought: Fantastic!

The speakers sounded brilliant last week, but for some reason I had my doubts that they could repeat the trick on an evening of classical only. I needn't have worried. They were even better than I remembered (and that's saying something) and I thought the combination of scale, speed, clarity and timbral accuracy was top drawer. Actually, at times it was astonishing.

All in all, it was a great night, and I really struggled to tear myself away at the end.

The word awesome is ridiculously overused. It actually applied here!

I'm used to being unimpressed by very fancy systems, but here we had a fantastic level of microdynamic detail in perfect perspective (definitely there but well back in the sound, as it ought to be) together with a sense of unlimited power and terrific speed resulting in really true timbres and a really visceral engagement with the music, well beyond anything I've heard.

I was really impressed!

Thanks to David and Jonathan for the exhilarating (and potentially eventually expensive!) evening!

Also present were Simon, Claus and James.

The tracks I played were

Image

"Auf ein altes Bild" from Wolf's Mörike Lieder sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau accompanied by Hertha Klust. This is from the archives of RIAS Berlin and was recorded in the 50s, when DFD was in his twenties and in very beautiful voice. Some defects of the old recording were evident under the microscope of the Avantgardes, but it was still delicious!

Image

"Asie" from Ravel's Schéhérazade sung by Anne-Sofie von Otter with the Cleveland Orchestra under Pierre Boulez. Wonderful delicacy of tiny details and eventually an overwhelming climax.

Image

"En Fantasirejse til Færøerne" (An imaginary journey to the Faroe Islands) by Carl Nielsen with the Danish NSO conducted by Thomas Dausgaard. Lots of fun, and even the quietest passages were very firmly present and in passages where several different noisy things were going on at once you could follow each one easily. The scale of the presentation was a joy!

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. I was sorry I hadn't brought any classical music with me on the night but it was fairly obvious these speakers could handle all genres with ease.

How's about a TirNaHifi lotto syndicate? ;)

Now there is a thought....what level of detail would one be getting from these speakers hooked up to a dCS system?!?!

That question was certainly discussed. We may do something about finding out!
