Thanks re the training Ivor. I will take you up on it. I had initially got a secondhand baby class prior to xmas but blew it up trying to clear a blockage. It now trips the elcb when turned on. I reckon the problem was the solenoid valve but at this stage I think my tampering not tamping has blown a circuit board.
The roasting sounds interesting maybe at the next hifi meet up there should be a coffee and dac section?
Highly recommend Ivors shop. Get very nice wine while discussing any hifi issues.

GH your friend's bags of green beans are a treasure so perservere with the popcorn maker, just put in a handful of beans so they can all jump around as they roast. Put in too much and you'll only burn the bottom ones. They should all change colour from pale green through yellow, caramel , brown and black. The first crack is loud cracking and second crack sounds more like electrical sparking.

You will not be able to make espresso unless you have a good grind but really good grinders are around 300euro but http://www.amazon.co.uk/DeLonghi-KG79-P ... 36&sr=1-61 is a burr grinder available in Harvey Norman etc. However the finest grind is too rough so take out the top grinding wheel and add spacers (milk carton cut into rings) until the grind is as fine as you can get without the grinding wheels touching. Lots of information here http://www.sweetmarias.com/instructions.php

the Gaggia MDF is a good starter grinder for €175 (including basic training in Citywest) http://www.gaggia.ie/machine/gaggia-mdf-grinder/ or the Iberitial if you can find one! (beware some online sites). I picked up a second hand Pavoni years ago and it's been great. Sometimes the coffee forum on Boards.ie (or www.adverts.ie) will have bargains.

Got one off ebay from italy. Rancillio Rocky. Ex demo so got about 20% off the usual price. Very good grinder with easy adjustment.

Link to seller below. He seems to get ex demo stuff I paid around the €195-200 for the rocky but that grinder on adverts would be well above the rocky. Looks like a potentially good buy for somebody.

thanks for info re coffee beans Ken I wasnt aware of that process. I had come across people recommending that route on forums but I imagined it required a large oven contraction like a pizza shop. Roll on the next sale of lidl popcorn cheapie thing.
