Stereophile Subscription

Post by james »

I took out a one year Stereophile subscription last year (There was a special offer with automatic renewal). It is time to renew and I have decided to keep getting it. However I am not too pleased with the cancellation option which involves phoning the US.

Here is a quote from my renewal notice ..

"... When your subscription to Stereophile comes up for renewal, we will automatically renew it at our special rate of $55.00 for 12 issues. For your convenience, your subscription will continue uninterrupted so you never miss an issue, unless you request it to stop. If you wish to cancel at any time, please call 1-800-666-3746. ..."

I am happy enough to keep getting it but I would much prefer to be able to cancel via email. .

Best of luck calling a US free phone number from here!

At some point, I'd really like the EU to bring in a law that you must be able to cancel a contract the same way you set it up. To be honest I'm surprised that hasn't happened yet.

My own subscription was just renewed. I was given the option to cease but really I'd want to keep it going. Looking at stuff I won't have at home for 20 years!

It may be possible to cancel the DD by logging into the bank online services. As distinct from getting the vendor to cancel from their end.

That way when the DD request comes through it will be denied by the bank and the vendor will then contact you via email with notification that payment was not recieved etc.

I remember trying to cancel an Amazon Prime subscription, very complicated and despite jumping through all the hoops Amazon continued to debit my account with the monthly subscription. Eventually I logged into my bank and cancelled the DD from my side and that was the end of it. Yes I received several email notifications from Prime but I just deleted them.

You're absolutely right. Instruct your bank, in writing, to stop amd payments. It should be as easy as that and takes any doubt out of the equation.

If you can suffer the digital version, the Stereophile subscription is available on Zinio.com for £7.36/yr.

The auto renew can also be switched off there.

Better than that - you can get it for free through your library app (borrowbox etc)

maybe it's part of my vinyl weakness but the digital version, which I also get with the paper one, doesn't do it for me at all.

Is that still the case at your library branch?

I ask as it stopped being available for me at the cork library about 6 months ago along with gramophone, songlines and jazzwise and hi-fi choice.
