Record player suggestions

Post by RickyB75 »

I’m thinking of investing in a record player, though I have little to no experience bar an all in one system I used approx 20 years ago.
The kids are big enough to know not to touch now, and I have roughly 200 albums I’d like to bring down from the attic and dust off.

Ideally looking for something plug and play, as the thought of building a turntable or having a complicated tone arm to set up leaves me cold. Budget up maybe a €1000. Must also have a lid.

Would appreciate anybody’s thoughts or experiences in getting me started.

Thanks

Ricky

You could do worse than a Rega 3, but I would say that, wouldn't I?

Brave step. Rega 3 or Pro-ject RPM, I think both are available with arm and cartridge. I recently seen the RPM available in Savins. The Rega in Hifi Hut.
If your amp doesn’t have an in built phono stage you’ll have to figure one in, MM or MC to match the cartridge and a couple of RCA cables to link it up. You might try to grab an ex demo to make your€€€ go further. Or, hunting the preloved market can yield some great results.
BTW, what’s your system?

Cloney Audio also have Rega, I’m not sure if they still sell Pro-ject.

Thanks for the suggestions. Forgot about the phono stage. Not sure if my streamer pre/amp has one, will check.
Current set up is nothing exotic and extremely humble by this forums standards.

That’s a nice setup. I wish I could get mine back to the essentials. Back to the TT, Dual are worth having a look at. The two I previously mentioned are at the €1k or there abouts. There are very good TTs for a lot less money and when set up properly perform really well.
I know that Cloney from time to time take trade-ins and may well have something nice that’s not up on their website. For the sake of a phone call or a quick visit, could get you sorted.
I’m sure there are others on here that can provide a better set of options.

Cloney have a selection of very well priced TTs as you're not alone in getting back into or starting out in vinyl.
just make sure you have a decent cart included and a relevant connection in your amp... or a phono stage
Of course other stores mat have similar offers but you know why we recommend the Boys from the Blackrock Stuff!

If you have a sprung wooden floor you will probably need a wall shelf. Otherwise when you walk across the floor the needle will tend to skip.

I use a Thorens TD150 mk2. They are a simple but easily upgraded design too. Mine has an audio technica at1005mk2 tonearm fitted which adds much more detail and oomph.

Add a good phono stage, moving coil cartridge, sut and you wont look back.

Good isolation will treat that... even just cork sanding blocks.
