Rega Planar 8 platter sticking.

Post by PatD »

Hi,
I have had the Rega Planar 8 for just two months. The turntable sticks when l turn on Rega PSU.When l give the platter a little push it takes off and plays perfect.l turn off and l have the same sticking problem when l turn PSU back on.I have tried a few things like switching back on and unplugging. Is there an issue with the power supply? Has anyone got a solution or an idea.l have tea little oil too to no avail.
Cheers.

If you take the belt off and give the platter a push how long does it freewheel before it stops?

Do you mean take belts off and spin both sub platter and main platter?

I have limited knowledge of different turntables but my main TT is an old Roksan and it too likes to get a little help when turned on (as I do myself!).
I don't know Rega motors but maybe they're the same? Some motors are almost instantly at full RPM and others, while slow to reach speed, are designed to be consistent and accurate rather than quick off the starting blocks.
Any other Rega users find this? It's not necessarily a fault.

Yes - the idea is to find out is it the bearing (should spin very freely) or is it power supply. If you ake off the belt, put the platter back on, give it a push, it should rotate very freely, and very smoothly come to a stop without any "stickiness). If that is OK, then it has to be on the drive side.

Also, Rega are meant to have excellent support, so best give them a call/email

I had a rega 2 for years, that was exactly what happened when the drive belt needed replacement. The belt had stretched, it no longer had enough purchase to turn the heavy platter. Giving it a little push to start it turning got it up to speed and played fine.
A new belt sorted it, but I continued to give the platter a little push start, just to keep the initial torque pressure off the drive system.
My first move would be to throughly clean the belt see if you get any improvement.
