A turntable, finally?
Re: A turntable, finally?
Thanks Cyndale. There's a lot of discussion online about that compliance figure and whether the cart works with the Rega arm. Apparently the AT figure is quoted at 100Hz, whereas compliance is normally quoted at 10Hz. A reading of 10 @ 100Hz = approx 18 @ 10Hz? This is only what I'm reading, I don't claim to know the truth! The reports of people who have tried the combo seem positive, but more analysis required from my side, I think.
The Rega cart has pretty high output and if anything I'm concerned it's too high. I think I'd feel more comfortable slightly lower, tbh, but one way or the other I think I've reasonable headroom there.

Re: A turntable, finally?
I would agree the Rega Elys 2 has a high output. If it is as I described... too loud too early on the volume control... that would be a problem for me.Diapason wrote: ↑Mon Oct 12, 2020 5:06 pm Thanks Cyndale. Just to clarify compliance specification is the springiness of the cantilever in the cartridge. A low compliance of 10cu means that the suspension is quite stiff and is suitable for high mass tonearms. A high compliance 15cu upwards means the suspensions is quite springy and is suitable for low mass tonearms. The Rega RB330 is a low mass tonearm (11g) and the Audio Technica is a low compliance cartridge. I have attached the specifications for the Audio Technica. The important specification is the Dynamic Compliance figure.
As I said... you don't put real bouncy springs on a heavy goods vehicle and you don't put real stiff springs on a Toyota Aygo.
Re: A turntable, finally?
Yes, understood. However, the calculator you linked above said the compliance should be measured at 10Hz, whereas the spec you have pasted there has the compliance measured at 100Hz. Actually, looking at the calculator again, it says that the 100Hz compliance spec should generally be multiplied by 1.5-2.0 to get the 10Hz compliance number to be put into the calculator. That's in keeping with the 18 (x 10^-6) I mention above.
Basically I'm saying that the compliance number to be put in the calculator is (probably) more like 18, which gives a good resonance number with the 11g of the Rega 330 arm.

Re: A turntable, finally?
Leaving everything aside, it is a pity that you can't try another turntable in your system to see if the sibilance issue persists! It would be a huge disappointment if you changed from the Rega Elys 2 and still had issues! Patience and perseverance is key!
Re: A turntable, finally?
Indeed. Anything else I ever buy is the result of borrowing and swapping stuff in and out*. This is new territory for me!

Re: A turntable, finally?
Ok, we'll try to find a suitable time. I might bring my own TT as well, so I can demonstrate the issues directly.
Thank you!
