Go BIG or go HOME... Class A amplification done Lifepo4 style

Post by nige2000 »

Ive had some crazy ideas before,
for some reason i was quite confident this one would work,
looking back im not sure why:)

ive had some pass f-5 pcb boards lying around this long time waiting to be put to work

using a variation of the power technology used the group buy amp i used these premade pcbs
http://passclone.blogspot.ie/p/blog-page.html to prove my theory before starting from scratch
(these are good quality and good value really would recommended for a standard implementation )

once the pass clones were installed it was obvious that
A: it worked
B:the power supply was able to keep up with the bias discharge just about :)
C: it sounded good enough to pursue further investigation
D: and of course most importantly.... IT DIDN'T EXPLODE!..

this followed by using blank f5 boards to try my lunacy on
direct connection to the almighty power of the lifepo4 battery pack
precision resistors in the feedback loop
jfet buffer pre entry to amplification

After some soldering, head scratching and the magic smoke rising
i had the first working prototype
and boy can she sing

then on to fryderyk for the first class pcb design

only one issue with it is the amount of heat it generates as a stereo unit
im fairly sure if i put a lid on it that it would hinder the cooling enough that you could call it a stove!!
this is because there is 20 regulated supplies in it all working at moderate levels
plus the heat dissipated through the output mosfets

Mono is the only way this bird can fly (well safely at least without concern or fear)
which i plan to do for myself in time

You must have enough batteries to power a car by now.

So this must be the same amp I saw in a different thread, but don't remember which one.

It might have been mentioned in another thread
Maybe one of the mosfet threads

I've probably had about 200 of those cells here
At about 15 euro each ouch....
140 of these for the gb

It's no wonder the sq expectation is high for these battery projects

This is a fantastic project, and I've been very lucky to hear it - fabulous sound,, sort of a big brother to the group buy amp. Not a build to be undertaken lightly though! Between cases, batteries and components it wouldn't be cheap..... But worth it.

+1 Heard it a couple of times and it betters the group buy in single amp mode. Whatever it has sublime is the word that comes to mind. There is a a pair of monoblocks coming soon and looking forward to hearing them reckon that will be the pinnacle.
