RIP Pierre Boulez

Post by DonKC »

So glad I got to hear him conduct the Mahler 8th in New York with the Berlin Staatskapelle a few years ago. As much as I love modern music, his mostly left me cold, but some like "…explosante-fixe…" were fascinating. His Mahler was controversial, somewhat analytical and a bit cold, but interesting in how it illuminated the inner voices and technique Mahler used to convey his ideas.

No matter what, a giant in music.

Very sad news, may he rest in peace.

His recorded Mahler performances left me cold whilst his Starvinsky is scintillating.

I would not say his Mahler is my choice, but was fascinating to hear him do it. One to avoid... the horrid Handel Water Music Royal Fireworks Music he did in New York. dull dull dull.... did I say dull? Perverse too.

His Cleveland "Le Sacre" is superb.
