new member needs advice: a good, but relatively cheap,tt

Post by Maz65 »

This is for vinyl specialists... I'm looking for a turntable base + arm for my Dynavector xx2-mk2 I bought in the past.
I need your help in finding a turntable model that can fit my budget, around 1600$ (or 1500 euro) or less, and my cartridge.

New or second hand does not matter, DD or belt drive does not matter, simply if you ever listen my cartridge in a not-so-expensive setup or you can give me some ideas on what I should looking for.
What I need is speed and bass control, because on vinyls I listen mainly Progressive Rock, or mainstream rock, no other genres.

My phono preamp is a Lehmann Decade.

My first idea was for Rega RP8 but it is over budget... and I need to save money for the new loudspeakers ;-)

Any suggestion is welcomed, thanks in advance !

Surprised Max none of the TT heads have given you some advice here. Maybe nobody has experience of what you are thinking about. Unfortunately not in a position to offer any words of wisdom here.

Hi Max,

You could pick up a very nice, used Linn Sondek for that kind of money. This one features your cartridge.

@ Terry, thanks for the suggestion, as I can see you have a Dyna too. LP12...speed and bass control? If you say so, maybe I have the possibility to try an LP12.

@HiFiFan, I dislike Projects not for the price/quality ratio but because their catalogue is full of models with the result imho it is hard for me to distinguish one model to the other ;-)

Hi Max,

I'm using the Audiotechnica AT0C9/III cartridge with a Dynavector P75 MkIII phono stage. I haven't heard your cartridge but have a read of the following thread. It's a bunch of LP12 users on the suitability/sound character of the Dynavector XX2

Thanks Terry, you gave me to read for all this evening ;-)

One hour ago I was in the hifi shop close to my house, taking a look on the second hand gear.
Two interesting tts:

1) Thorens TD524, very good state, I have a suspect of arm not in the best state, at 1500/1800 euro, maybe too much but what a superb machine !

2) Heybrook with alphason arm and external power supply for switching speed, mint state, at approx 900 euro

both tt have a new (rebuild) dust cover

any comment ?

I would look at these within your budget: http://www.hifihut.ie/turntables-irelan ... =1000-1500

Or here maybe: http://www.decoaudio.com/deco_audio_turntables.html

Analogue Works, didn't Cybot buy one a while ago? He might be able to point you in the right direction. The certainly would be on my shopping list if I could afford an upgrade: https://www.divineaudio.co.uk/analogue- ... -zero-6563

The Heybrook looks interesting and is at a good price in the condition you described. The TT2 has been criticised for a "boominess" in the bass, a characteristic which could be exacerbated by your cartridge. Have a read of the following...

Maybe your local dealer will let you borrow the Heybrook for a weekend. Failing that he may be willing to fit your cartridge to audition in store.
