William Schuman
Symphony # 3, # 5 and #8

Bernstein (from the Bernstein Symphony Edition)
I have never made my mind up about William Schuman. Symphonies are sort of dry and terse in that mid 20th century vein. I prefer Piston's 8 symphonies over most of Schuman. But the Symphony # 5 for strings is impressive.

That does surprise me Fergus. I do like the Mozart Violin Concertos, they are light, short, full of colour and joy. The performances of the first three is very good indeed, very enjoyable.fergus wrote:Seán wrote:

The 29th is a funny one. The first movement is played at a fast tempo whereas the second movement is inclined to drag, that said it is an enjoyable performance. The performances of the two violin concertos is a delight and Midori Seiler is a gorgeous musician. A good 'find'.

Anima Eterna and Jos van Imerseel are playing here in 2 weeks. An all Schubert concert on the fortepiano and next day Beethoven´s 5th and 6th. They are also doing all Beethoven symphonies in Guanajuato.
