Ah, yes, I had forgotten that you had that set Seán.
Do not forget Harnoncourt who is also very good with this music. Both Gardiner and Harnoncourt have that raw energy which brings this music alive for me.

The cello concerto is both a discursive and a conversational affair with the orchestra and the mixture is both intriguing and successful.
The chamber music was also exciting and accessible if a bit stark in its musical language at times.

Something quite beautiful to transmute this dismal day into a spiritual and contemplative one.

And a cracking good introduction to the great composer too!

I do not have any of Arvo Pärt's music in my collection and until now would not have known where to start. Thanks Mark.

Magnificent performance, this is about as good as it gets.

Hi Fergus,
In a way yes. With his 80th. in mind, I was browsing through the selection available for streaming and was struck by the cover.
I sampled the version of "Fratres" and was moved by the performance and then went back to the beginning of the album and played the whole thing through and was very impressed.
There is a gravitas and power to Russian choirs which is present here and which I really like.
The album, which mainly represents some of his earlier sacred work, sits in my favourites list now.

Mark.

I agree Seán, Bernstein's Sibelius is wonderful.

A bit of early Dvorak tonight: the long, slightly clunky but still full of Dvorak melody and rhythm, Symphony # 1 "The Bells of Zlonice"
