Trumpet Concertos by Haydn, Hummel & L Mozart....

Wonderful musician.

He certainly was Seán. That is only a recent purchase and therefore also a first listen so I will go back and listen in greater detail for Jazz influences in this performance. I know that he had some classical training so I was very interested to hear him perform.

Dvorak Cello Concerto - a very good version indeed with great solo playing.

Prokofiev: Symphony - Concerto for cello and orchestra - this is not a work that I know and I thought that it was a wonderfully intriguing work, again very well played. I wonder does Seán know it?

I Love it Fergus. I have the Naxos recording with the always excellent Theodore Kuchar conducting the National Orchestra of Ukraine and Rudin playing cello, it is WONDERFUL.

I saw Wynton, his brother Branford and their stunning quintet in Cork in 1981. Their plane was delayed, they arrived late at about 11.30, and they exploded on to the stage in what was a breath-taking performance, their energy, melodic solos and pure musicality was a joy. It lingers long in the memory.
I have asked Lance to present a programme in his honour he told me he would but has yet to do so.

Wynton's annual Ellington high school band competition is FANTASTIC. I love it.

Interesting repertoire, very well played, but pity it´s not 100% HIP. Pahud uses his gold flute, a gorgeous instruments, but most of these concertos were composed for the traverso. The Kammerorchester Basel can switch to period instruments in a wink. Here modern violins were used but with baroque bows which seems rather silly. Of course Antonini manages to make it all work, but why not everything HIP?

Now a number of recordings are being made this way when companies shy away from rare composers or unknown performers. In the booklet appear the names of the most important donors.

This is the first recording of an opera by Gasparini, very likable music. The recording is mostly good, with a good orchestra in Auser Musici. And it´s a miracle that it got recorded at all.

That approach has gained in popularity with a selection of Jazz performers. A few years ago the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra (VJO) invited fans to make subscriptions to enable them to record live performances. It was a great success and yours truly -- together with Ray Comiskey of the Irish Times -- gets an honourable mention in the accompanying booklet. I was delighted with that as I have followed their progress since the late seventies.
