Thank you Pepe!

A recent purchase....

To my ear this is a somewhat measured performance of the Beethoven violin concerto. Tempi are on the slow side but it is well paced and the music and phrasing has plenty of time to breath in the first two movements. The tempo picks up in the final movement which ultimately drives on to a grand finale. Pepe commented recently that Chung’s playing has a very feminine vulnerability that is very touching in this recording and I certainly see that in the slow movement; her playing is very fine throughout.

The Bruch VC No. 1 is another strong performance from both soloist and orchestra. Chung’s playing is both tender and powerful in the appropriate places. This is certainly no filler and is a great coupling for me with two of my favourite violin concertos getting very good performances.

I have rediscovered the Rhenish and this is very good indeed:

Robert Schumann
Symphony No. 3

Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich
David Zinman conducting.
Rich textures in a very fine performance of Schumann's finest symphony. Recommended.

A few years ago I made less than favourable comments regarding music by Brahms, particularly his symphonies. Jared and Pepe urged me to reconsider and Pepe recommended Harnoncourt and the BPO's symphony cycle. Jared was kind enough to send me a cd in the post of his chamber music and as a result I have 'seen the light' or rather heard the music and now his second symphony (as performed by Harnoncourt and the BPO) is one of my favourite works. Thank you gentlemen.

Which brings me to this:

Johannes Brahms
Symphony No. 2

David Zinman conducting.

This is a splendid performance, I have had it on repeat play over the weekend.
