Mahler: Symphonies Nos. 4 & 5....

I do not think that one can discuss Mahler performances without talking about Bruno Walter given the connection between the two men. Symphony No. 4 is particularly noteworthy here.

In his farewell concert with the Vienna Philharmonic he conducted his 2 favorite composers: Mozart and Mahler, and he indeed chose the 4th Symphony, with Schwarzkopf as soloist.

A recent purchase: JS Bach - Orchestral Suites....

Image

I have a small number of Boston Baroque / Pearlman performances in my collection and I have not been disappointed by any of them. These readings of the Bach Orchestral Suites proved to be no different; they were very well played [a lovely sounding brass section in particular] and were well paced with the requisite lilt for dance music. The set comes warmly recommended.

Bruno Walter's Mahler recordings are very special indeed.

MOZART & MAHLER:
My traversal of the wonderful world of Mozart continued with:

Image
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Symphony No. 35, 29, 33, 38 & 41

Orchestra Mozart
Claudio Abbado conducting.

I LOVE this orchestra and in particular the light and delicate airy sound of the first violins, this is a very fine set, recommended.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Symphony No. 35, 29 & 41

Prague Chamber Orchestra
Charles Mackerras conducting.

After an online discussion with a friend on FB regarding our favourite performances of Mahler's First Symphony I was persuaded to temporarily postpone my Mozart symphony odyessy and enticed to revisit the Solti Mahler One, what a splendid recording it is by a team of GREAT Mahlerians.

Gustav Mahler
Symphony No. 1

Chicago Symphony Orchestra
Georg Solti conducting.

I still prefer the Kubelik BRSO studio performances.

I am not familiar with that outfit at all. Thanks for the recommendation.
