Sometimes the cover versions that a musician chooses to sing give us the clearest insight into her creative inclinations.  The importance of The Pop Group's Y album is still insufficiently recognised and stands, in my mind, with Television's Marquee Moon and Public Image Limited's Metal Box as one of the most important and influential recordings of the late Seventies.  (Indeed, I can hardly imagine The Birthday Party, to take one example, without some level of exposure to The Pop Group.)  Here is St. Vincent's version of the song, She Is Beyond Good And Evil, recorded for The Tonight Show in the US two years ago and it is significant that she chose this song rather than promote the latest single from her album (which is probably what the TV producers were expecting).    Her delight in performing his song is palpable and I find it electrifying.  What I remember most from this performance is the repetition of the closing lines, "Western values mean nothing to her", leading into the climax of  "She is beyond good and evil".  



And this, recorded last month at Nirvana's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is a very powerful version of Nirvana's Lithium.  Other than Kurt Cobain, I don't believe I've ever heard anybody sing a Nirvana song with this much visceral intensity.   Wonderfully potent and truly life-affirming stuff.

That cover was probably a precursor to were her latest album's direction. Saw her live in the Olympia and the show was 'different' to her earlier live stuff. Tried convincing some of the detail CA men by slipping in a track every now and then but so far met with derision and return to Oscar Peterson. I see Mister Fallon doesn't realize the track is not on her album.

oh Nasty!! the worst track on the album and god knows why he would perform that live on TV but the title probably explains. Good to see Nigel you are doing your home work as you might find a few gems also when doing a bit of digging. I refuse to post any links for Garth Brooks youtube video's.
