adding warmth etc you usually lose more than you gain
think pcs with noise and jitter problems can't handle the detail, and due to poor time keeping and noise causes earache
just an observation over many tweaks, dont mean to sound like an ass :)
lets not go there.
This is a voicing preference, that's it.
To change the subject....I still have trouble getting MQn started after booting. I use W8.1 "home" so I can't turn on admin elevation via the control panel they way you can with Pro or Enterprise. I use the Administrator account which runs elevated, this seems to help but not all the time. I toggle EnableLUA, the value doesn't matter (0 or 1) but the toggling seems to have an effect, weird.
What I'm noticing is that if I shutdown then boot as two discrete actions I have trouble with MQn. If I do a "restart" I normally get MQn running. I also notice that restart takes a couple of minutes to shutdown the laptop whereas selecting "shutdown" the action takes just a couple of seconds. Is restart in some way closing down Windows properly but shutdown isn't? Could this be the source of my problems?

I think we should go there but maybe on a different thread. It is important to understand what preferences people have as it at least allows us understand why they find a version good/bad etc.
Aleg's slick is the word I would use to describe overly detailed (fatiguing) sound so funny really that we both use the same word but have different meanings or interpretations of what it means.
I would be in the 2ca camp I understand the need for detail and enjoy it but I don't want it to be shrill sounding. Nigel rightly points out that the CA transport can accentuate that sound. Sort out all the power and you get the detail but also more fluid sound. Have heard it when Nigel uses his transport in my system. His always is less fatiguing then mine. More effort has been put in to get rid of pico and the ppang usb card and now the clocks powered separately. It all adds to the mix.
Tend to find myself agreeing with 2ca it is a voicing preference but agree with Nigel also that the transport impacts that and so does avx over sse2. If the transport is well sorted you get avx detail retrieval without earache when it is a good version.

Are you by any chance using Hybrid Shutdown / Fast Startup?
I don't want to go too much of the topic, but I would like to share my experience since I've got new dac. I am still learning a lot, but I can surely say that KS is way to go, what Gordon kept saying. I've been using it with JRiver playing some native DSD files or 24/192 converted to DSD, and all I can say is, superb. I started with Asio, but KS is way to go, so I assume that MQn would benefit off of it too.

Thanks Aleg! I have now disabled fast startup and what's more MQn worked following a shutdown/boot. It seems logical that my reboots weren't really full restarts.....maybe this will fix it finally!

Therefore I believe a software player should be neutral in sound balance, dynamic in character and as highly detailed as possible, and all adjustments to your personal preferences should be done in/with your system and not with the software.
actually, i start to understand why aleg prefers 3.27 avx.
aleg is using R2. largesystemcache is enabled. also other bcdedit settings differ to sbgk's win8 settings.
it stretches the sound, while 3.27 brings sound together. perfect combo.
tested 3.27 on another setup of mine that loosens timing only. sounds good.
aleg, if you go for tweaks that tightens the timing, you would find 3.27 intense.
if you know what i am talking about hehe
i used to go for timing loosening. eventually, it broke my face.
the only correct method of tweaking is tightening + improve focus + listening to micro. works for all players.
non-tweaked OS is mixed of different settings. one negating another. +1 -1 = 0. overall gain = zero.
should update my tweaks. plenty are outdated
