At first I was impressed by what they were doing but it didn't really move me, slowly they've won me over... absolutely fantastic music.

The Gloaming.

Great record - right from the start. Love the tone of the harp and kora combination.

I was not sure where to put this with its mix of both Classical and Traditional Irish music so I stuck it in here....

Back to the gloaming again. As I suspected a real slow burner. Very fine album
Also look out for the "Live in Dublin" download at http://downloads.newyorker.com/mp3/the_gloaming.mp3

I can't remember much of the soundtrack with the exception of the famous Sarabande, which has the dubious honour of being the only piece I ever arranged for a brass band!

Anyway, I still think this is the most beautiful-looking film I know.

Great concert from Toumani and Sidiki Diabate in the Half Moon last night. Sound of the kora is really beautiful in the hands of masters.

Listening to the album (see above) again today. Super.

I was at the concert in Dublin on Saturday.

some really sublime moments.

how does the album compare? usually world albums are well recorded and produced but I hate to get a flat representation of what the live performance was like.

The album is indeed a fine clear recording with great detail and good instrument separation.
I thought that the live performance had a warmer sound than the record, with richer bass and that the string plucking produced an atonal percussive element not present on the album. Of course as well as the production, some of this is down to the characteristics of my own humble kit and the vagaries of the PA in the Half Moon. In fact, I was curious to hear the kora un-amplified but there was no opportunity.
I'd certainly recommend the album, especially if you enjoyed the live show. Also, it's interesting to compare with the Catrin Finch + Seckou Keita record - Clychau Dibon - a combination of harp and kora.
