NOTE:
a. modded the PE of the old mqn.exe.
b. modified the original mqn.bat. load one song at a time. so, killing mqn.exe will go to next song
c. removed the sorting. so the order of files you copied is the order the songs will be played.

download here:
https://drive.google.com/?usp=folder&au ... 0plZTNGd0E

1. unzip the zip file. (all you need is in the zip)
2. ctrl+C the music files as usual.
3. double click "mqn.bat" to play
4. double click "next song.bat" to go to the next song

original old mqn is found here. if you need compare the difference between mod and original

enjoy the classic!

thx sbgk

ok JC not completely nutz

sounds really good, good flow and focus
surely an improvement on the original

still lacks the detail/resolution of the 2.7X MQn'S, which is hard to be without once heard

Whats the proaudio settings for these?
sd card player, modded soekris dac, class a lifepo4 amp or gb class a/b amp, diy open baffle speakers based on project audio mundorf trio 10's

I agree on the lack of detail, the 2.7x can show more of the microdynamics of acoustic instruments than this version.
It doesn't sound bad, but just not as good as the more recent mqn versions.

What you call good focus, I would call lack of soundstage. All the sound is so much dead centered it is almost mono. Something I don't like at all and is very unnatural when you know what the instrumental setup is on stage. Instruments right on top of each other or guitar right on top of the vocals instead of just off to the side.

I didn't compare it to the original so don't know what the actual improvement is this mod brings, but I'm not that interested as it doesn't match up with the newest versions.

Cheers

i didnt compare it against the original either but old 2.2 wasnt that good, regardless your right its not up there with the last few MQn's

only getting back to the timer resolution thing, will this work

free one seems to be fully functional
seems to add something good but small

I used to use that, but am not convinced that increasing the timer frequency does anything except add noise. In win 8 there is a setting I can use so that only MQn gets an increase in system timer frequency I think, have tried that with the same results - an increase in digital noise. Running google chrome sets it to 1ms.

Just tried daphile, but am not convinced, quite a strident sound which was disappointing. Nice idea though.

the version is mqn.exe2.2.
because old versions tend to improve/change a lot with PE mod. new versions less so. also too many new versions

when you compile mqn, there should be settings regarding SizeOfStackReserve, SizeOfStackCommit, SizeOfHeapReserve, SizeOfHeapCommit.
also changed MajorLinkerVersion to 0A from... forgot...

interesting note: there is "DefaultRpcStackSize" in the registry. it is same stack settings as above, which you can modify for services like AudioSrv. affects SQ too. haven't time to figure out best value hehe

Aleg, don't fall in love with soundstage you hear on a windows setup. i doubt it is any correct. i can easily tell you 20 things (outside of mqn) that affect soundstage on windows. you cannot be sure the external factors have correct influence on soundstage. for example, your clockrate whatever it is (23220?!), already distorts soundstage coz it is not totally in syn between mqn and your dac hehe

if you have spent sometimes tweaking rather than using convenience audiophile script, you will realize soundstage is very unstable on windows.

i know your speakers can produce correct soundstage. doesn't mean it can correct incorrect soundstage. incorrect soundstage is worse than no soundstage in my opinion.
people seem easily to confuse 3D effects with natural 3D.

The 'problem' with this version is it will only set the maximum resolution of 0.5 ms and no intermediairy values. Pushing your machine to the limit may not be a good idea and may be responsible for the digital noise Gordon hears?

I forgot all about my offer just before my mobo-crash.
This weekend I will send you the source code and compile instruction for a version that can set intermediairy values on a temporary basis and one that installs as a service and works on a permanent basis.

I feel you need to set the timerresolution in balance with your driver buffersize.
I use 2ms for both and think it sounds very good that way.

Cheers

I'm not going for a 'big soundstage' at all nor just for the sake of it.

I want to have it sound natural. I'm in this case not speaking about 3D soundstage, so not depth, but just spread so 2D.

When I listen to a solo vocal with guitar, I know the guitarist sits just about a meter and a half to the left of the vocalist on stage. I don't want to hear to guitarist on top of the vocal, but about 1 meter and a half to the left.
When I listen to a string quartet I want to hear the first violinist to the left, the cello to the right and second violinist and viola in the middle of the soundstage, not all on top of each other.

I'm not looking to exagerate any of these effects but I want them to be present in a natural way that is there when I hear it live.

BTW Nowadays I listen with DRC-music which corrects also phase issues and does present the music from my speakers in a very detailed and natural sounding way. Now it is just the playback itself that needs to be correct.

Cheers
