I'm finally getting to look at these options properly, and I can already feel the budget creeping up. What's new, eh?

Quick question: what OS would I be using with all of this in an ideal world, and how much would that cost to add into the pot?

Windows 2012 server it only costs circa €5-700 per licence. Very worthwhile though

If you are doing a build Simon you will end up having to pay for a copy of windows 8. They are generally bundled when purchasing made up.
Seen some builds on the internet that are not much over what it costs to build and you have your copy of 8.The alternative is to make it up and try 2012 for a few months. I should have gone back up the post a bit I didn't see some of the earlier responses from Nigel I thought the post where I jumped in was your first apologises.

Yeah, I was looking at premade alternatives late this afternoon and I'm wondering am I giving myself hassle for no good reason. Although I'm kind of interested in doing the build for its own sake too. I'll learn a lot and it might give me confidence to do other things...
Future audio requirements seem almost certain at some stage too.

one of them nuc's or brix would be fine for general media use
