You have inspired me to do the same Fergus, with Volume 1 of this set. Not heard Boccherini in a while so it is refreshing change of pace!

It is lovely music Don and quite relaxing too....I hope that you enjoyed it!

and when I see a gap and an important one at that, and you mention the word Freiburg............well I need a restraining order to control myself. Am I right in thinking that the Consort is a subset of the [excuse me while I genuflect] Freiburg Barackorchester?

Yes indeed Seán....members of that venerable ensemble; in this case five of them producing a wonderful sound as one would imagine. However, as Pepe has pointed out they do not perform the full work but chamber music played by a selection of the Freiburgers is something not to be spurned I say!!

It is in fact unfortunate that they didn´t record it complete, because all the quartets are glorious.
If you want to try it, the Brilliant with Musica ad Rhenum is inexpensive and very well played.

You will be glad to know that I have finally finished my Boccherini Symphonies with Vol. 8 of the set....

As I mentioned at the outset I had some of Boccherini’s Cello Concertos and some of his Chamber music on my shelves and I have always liked it. I had therefore always hankered to try Boccherini’s symphonic output. I have found it to be charming, entertaining and quite akin to chamber music in its structure, presentation and feel. The music is pleasant, melodic and quite inventive so it keeps one’s attention. The playing by these relatively small forces maintains a chamber atmosphere which I like and preserves a nice sense of intimacy which I think both suits and enhances the music by revealing an inherent sparkle through the lighter textures in the music. It is music that is definitely worth exploring as he certainly has a voice of his own.

Nice summary there of Boccherini's music Fergus. There are plenty of gaps in my Boccherini collection so I'll add these recordings to my list.

I have the set for a few years now but I think that it sells for over £50 nowadays on Amazon. It is a lovely set however.
