I don't know how good a version this is, but the music is wonderful....
If you love it, it's great and it is always a joy to seek out other performances too.

^^ I remember having the Il Giardino Armonico set on repeat play one weekend last year Sean... wonderfully life-affirming music which I'd imagine with those forces is beautifully played..

The viola da gamba is, to my mind, one of the most expressive instruments in music.  It is capable of communicating the most personal, most heartfelt thoughts in the most direct way to the listener.   In the hands of its greatest exponents, Jordi Savall and Paolo Pandolfo, it is a conduit to the heart's most private thoughts. Mieneke van der Velden is a more reserved musician than these masters, but it would be a mistake to judge a lack of outward expressivity as mere shallowness.  Her most recent release, Hommages (recorded with harpsichordist Glen Wilson and available on the ever-excellent Ramee label), is an extraordinarily moving listening experience.  Comprised of musical homages to composers and teachers that left an indelible mark on the minds of Marais and Forqueray (as well as less well-known composers like d'Anglebert and Dolle), this is an intensely personal and intimate performance that succeeds in speaking both to the mind and the heart.  Personally speaking, there is something about the timbral sonorities of the viola da gamba that I find inxpressibly moving.  Very highly recommended.
