It's my first recording of this work, I'm looking forward to its arrival.

^^ well, Herreweghe takes a softer, enigmatic, almost mystical approach to the piece which I find quite beautiful... it really is quite different from the more robust perfomance offered by Gardiner for instance, but for me they compliment each other and both are indispensible in any collection.

incidentally, if you've never heard Brahm's EDR before, then you really are in for an absolute treat; it's one of his pinnacles of achievement... ;-)

I have heard several interpreters of Bach's sacred music including Bruggen's, Gardiner's, Suzuki's and Herrewegghe's and my first choice is for Herreweghe, so I expect that I will like his take on Brahms' sacred music. That said, I want to hear more of Gardiner: my collection is seriously lacking in that respect.

Ah well, I just couldn't resist buying a bargain basement copy of Bruggen's recordings of the Paris Symphonies with the Orchestra of the 18th Century, Pepe is a bad influence:

Thanks Jared, I will have to behave myself now. I really do have enough recordings of Haydn's Paris Symphonies but I couldn't resist that offer.

^^ having just boasted that I've been studiously working my way through the 'to be listened to' pile, so that its as small now as its ever been, I've promtly gone and splashed out on half a dozen more (albeit reasonably priced) purchases...

... I really feel like a hamster on a cage-wheel...

The Herreweghe EDR and also his Missa Solemnis are essential recordings in my view. Get it while it's cheap!

Incidentally, I have a copy of Furtwangler's EMI recording on LvB 5 and 7 that I no longer need since purchasing the complete cycle. I'd be happy to send it to a good home (in the UK or Ireland) for NOTHING. PM me with an address if you're interested....
