Jaypurs, I have 4 discs and one download of it.... one of the few works I own multiple copies of
Brass Bands are all very well in their place -

The Herreweghe Bach Magnificat is certainly the best recording, but the Zelenka and Kuhnau definitely deserved to be heard, no wonder Bach had his sons copy Zelenka manuscripts for his own library.Seán wrote:I have that recording but I rarely listen to the Zelenka or Kahnau as I cannot see beyond Bach's magnificent work, I must listen to them again soon. I am delving into my archives here with this set....
The music making is very clean and crisp and has great energy throughout though not aggressive and the playing is very stylish. It is a 1988 recording and I find nothing harsh about it. The sound is also very full, the orchestra having plenty of “weight” in the sound and that sound is quite distinctive with lots of woodwind and brass apparent. Symphonies 1, 2 & 5 are conducted by Monica Huggett with the rest of the cycle being conducted by Roy Goodman.

Recent listening and a nod in the direction of Seán for the featured artist....
Interestingly, for a long time this work was rather difficult for me to come to terms with. It was an Oistrakh performance that actually did it for me (a different one to the one above) and now it is one of my favourite Violin Concertos.
