It simply isn't an easy piece to get into Fergus, and is clearly for meditative purposes rather than for pure enjoyment, in the same way that I'd describe some of the Russian liturgical works. the Accentus version is very French in its style. You remember my comments on the Herreweghe version of Brahms' EDR? Well the contrast here is even stronger, and for me, this version of Via Crucis would be my preferred one..
