That is one of the few remaining CDs on my Wish List Darren so I would be particularly interested to know what you thought of it.

It was my second listen Fergus. When I first played it a few years back I was underwhelmed, but how wrong I was! It's a very good performance and one that might make me look into other Mackerras' recordings of Mahler. The RLPO - as you will know from the LvB cycle - play wonderfully for this conductor

One of Solti´s most unexpected surprises was what a good Elgarian he was. Of course he was very well known for his Mahler, but not every great Mahler conductor did well in Elgar, like Bernstein.
Solti recorded the Elgar symphonies in the early 70´s, when the London Philharmonic was at his finest, in fact at the time, with Rodney Friend as concertmaster, it was England´s finest orchestra. Later in the decade when Abbado took up the LSO, that great orchestra recuperated the # 1 position.
