Thanks James and others. I am really learning a lot. Probably should have posted this before I started ripping! I need to look at the settings in Audacity or do I need different software?
Now that I probably need to rip all CDs again with EAS I don't want to have to do the same with the LPs. Looks like I will also need a bigger NAS. The joys of hifi!

Ripping with audacity is good for vinyl - and allows you to split into tracks, etc. EAC is better though for CDs. Rip to at least flac in both cases. There are threads around here on setting up EAC and the web is full of stuff for the vinyl. FWIW, if I was going to record from vinyl in a serious way, I would be checking every part of my TT setup etc to guarantee best sound quality. Probably clean the record too unless it was very quiet already.

Still want to do it??

I'm just not sure its worth ripping vinyl unless its something that you can't get still.

Fran

Thanks for that. Much appreciated.
Noel Cloney gave the deck the once over (including new cartridge) recently and I am cleaning each LP as I go. I may be mad, but I have just set myself the goal of archiving it all (including some LPs that I am now ashamed to own - no names in case I offend anyone!). I can then safely consign the LPs to the attic and gain a bit of space in the livingroom.

I have already ripped all the CDs, to WMA using Windows Media Player, so I will probably need to revisit that, but not just now. I suspect I would be threatened with divorce if I set into that when grass needs cutting and other jobs need to be done!

Thanks again.

Thanks James. Very detailed article.

Can anyone with Sonos equipment indulge me by checking if you have the same problem as I have recently with RTE1? It is still coming on the right channel only. Lyric is fine. Is it me or them????

RTE now sorted!!

I emailed RTE and they came back to me very quickly to confirm some details. After some investigations on their side, they informed me that there had been a problem but that it was now sorted. I noticed the change first thing this morning, when I was listening to full stereo again on RTE 1.

Thanks to the folks in RTE (Cyril Ryan in particular) for sorting it out.

Now I can listen properly to those early Beatles tracks that sound really weird in one channel only, as they really overused the "pan" control in the early days of stereo. Listening to one the other night on the John Creedon show really sounded odd!

That's a good result. I wonder had RTE actually realised the problem before you called them? In any case, glad it got sorted and that it wasn't your equipment at fault.
