Re: Recent Purchases
^^ see you've just sold another disk on Amazon, Darren.
There's this box set of complete Dvorak SQs (Panocha/ Supraphon) I've had my eye on for some time, but for the price. A set came up on ebay for £15, but right at the end, it's just jumped up to £24... oh well, another day...

Re: Recent Purchases
^^ I'm on a ridiculously tight... almost non-existent budget until 25th Jan, as my current account is almost at nil balance; the problem being we last got paid on 16th Dec, 9 days before usual. I have just sold £40 worth of DVDs on ebay however, so that might now be my only means purchase for the next 10 days...

Re: Recent Purchases
^^ I will be pretty tight for the rest of the month now too. I have trip to London in a couple of weeks to hear the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. When I can I will snap up some bargains online - purely by making sacrifices elsewhere of course ;-)

Sounds like a good price. I have heard Menuhin's recording of the Brandenburgs and they were beautifully played. I remember posting on 'another' forum some of my Menuhin conducting purchases, and getting quite a few dismissive posts. I hope you enjoy them....let us know!Jared wrote:

Re: Recent Purchases
yes, I've come across 'Menuhin bashing' on a number of occasions at the other place. this isn't reflected much elsewhere (4 warm reviews from knowledgable listeners on Amazon for instance)... I wanted a pre-HIP set, which nevertheless didn't attempt to perform the works with an oversized orchestra, to compare it with the Pinnock; the only other set of most of these recordings, I own. I have a few Menuhin recordings, inc some Bach, which I enjoyed although I realise they are a little dated in terms of interpretation.. That's not a problem for me, especially for the money, as I'm interested to see how Bach was portrayed in the 1960's by someone who was forward thinking for his time.bombasticDarren wrote:Sounds like a good price. That is an excellent idea Darren!bombasticDarren wrote:^^ I think Naxos should send us some free discs after out efforts today Fergus! :-D
I know that Naxos prices are very competive and the very best that we can do over here is to get 3 Naxos CDs for €20 in Tower hence the purchase, 2 of which were on my List anyway.

That comes with the terroritory over there lads but the trick is to be able to ignore it and stick to what you believe in or want to achieve yourself. What you are endeavouring to do Jared with the HIP and pre Hip is a very interesting exercise and one that both Darren and I indulge in for comparison purposes. I think that it is really enlightening to see the way taste and interpretations have (sometimes dramatically) changed.Jared wrote:yes, I've come across 'Menuhin bashing' on a number of occasions at the other place. this isn't reflected much elsewhere (4 warm reviews from knowledgable listeners on Amazon for instance)... Re: Recent Purchases
Thank you, Fergus... we should take advice from others of course, however ultimately, we are responsible for our own listening development. Menuhin's Bach will certainly prove to be a contrast with Pinnock's austere HIP version, and as such I have been looking for this set (albeit half-heartedly) for some while, because it covers all the same works, but alas it is now OOP and I thought I had missed my chance.fergus wrote:That comes with the terroritory over there lads but the trick is to be able to ignore it and stick to what you believe in or want to achieve yourself. I will just add that I wished to hear the Menuhin with the Pinnock in a similar way to the Richter with the Gardiner in the choral works... it's the same principle for me, and something I shall be embarking on at length within the coming months...
