Johann Sebastian Bach
Orchestral Suites Nos 1, 2, 3 & 4

Freiburger Barockorchester
Petra Müllejans (Konzertmeister)
Gottfried von der Goltz (Konzertmeister)

I love this set, were it not for these guys I wouldn't be collecting baroque recordings, they really are special.

I am on a Mozart kick at the moment courtesy of Maria João Pires, the sonatas are a delight.
absolutely Sean... I have given these four run throughs over the past few days... not as profound as LvB's but delightful nontheless. My 2nd set of these will be Pires' on DG within the coming months.

The recent "Building a Library" on Mahler 8 suggested that Gergiev's recording

sounds magnificent if you turn the volume up much higher than you usually would. Last night I tried out the suggestion and the result was most enjoyable. Welcome to St Paul's Cathedral!

You listen at much lower volumes than I at the best of times Ciaran, I wonder how loud I'd end up playing this...?

I noticed that too whenever I've been at Ciaran's place. I'd normally listen at near twice the volume for large symphonic works and a bit less for chamber music.

More civilised ears, you see. We've ruined ours with metal and the like.

Speaking of listening too loud...

I absolutely love this album. You'd think I'd favour a smaller, more intimate approach to this music, but these performances are unashamedly large scale. If the crescendo in the Duruflé Sanctus doesn't raise a goosebump then there's no hope for you!
