This is lovely, charming music. The sonatas are obviously modelled on those of Scarlatti. There is nothing deep or involved here but Cimarosa’s opera credentials shine through with the singing, aria type melodies. It is a delightful listen!

I don't mind saying... this is a delight... top quality performances, with the highest quality sound imaginable on CD... Bernarda could be in my living room (now there's wishful thinking!)... all in a stunning fold out digipack case with 60 page book.. it hardly gets any better...

Shostakovich Quartet No. 11 played by the Mandelring Quartet. I can't stop listening to it.

LHL in Schumann's Frauenliebe und -leben in a live Wigmore Hall concert. I hope there's something on at the Wigmore Hall the next time I'm in London. I'll be going soon for the Degas exhibition at the RA.

Another that keeps getting played. François-Frédéric Guy in Prokofiev's 6th Piano Sonata. A bucket of icy water in the face over and over again. Refreshing!

That is a pity as I have some lovely versions of the Chants d'Auvergne.

^^ Sorry Fergus, but I don't think that if I listened to the Canteloube for the next week, I'd ever get to like it... far too saccharine I'm afraid..

you are of course right about the Opera.... the above disk (£1 in a charity shop, bizarrely new & sealed) seems to sum up everything I dislike about 19th century Italian Opera, and reinforces the fact that it's not a genre I'm ever really going to take to... HOWEVER...

strangely, I do like Purcell's Dido & Aeneas (I have 2 versions) so I thought that maybe I should dip my toe in the waters of Baroque opera, which I realise is a little different. To aid this process, I have purchased:

which I intend to watch before the Rameau, and will give each of them a fair hearing. If it's not for me, they can go back on ebay where I'll get most of my money back, but I really hope they do 'click' with me....
