I have a 2 or 3 disc Tallis collection of works by Tallis and the variety of style is amazing, changing with the church's laws about music and the changing belief in England. Still, I'm not sure I really 'get' the 40-part motet.

I'm already familiar with the work (Summerly/ Oxford Camerata/ Naxos) and find it to produce a majestic, all embracing wall of sound, with possibly the most intricate example of Polyphony of its age... certainly in this country. I can't explain in more detailed terms why I like it (and indeed the equally incredible Salve intermerata) but I find it quite a spiritual experience...fergus wrote:Tallis did write some beautiful music all right.
