Oh I know that Jared....I like to listen to some of the more obscure early stuff from time to time just to satisfy my ecclectic musical tastes!!!Jared wrote:I wasn't meaning it as a criticism... I just think that some of it is quite simply so far removed from our own listening experiences in 2011, that it can be quite a lot for the uninitiated to grasp...fergus wrote: Oh I know that I plough a very lonely furrow with regard to Ren / EM Jared and that these two genres, let alone a madrigal opera are very far from most peoples' priority listening....ah well, on I go to listen to some Obrecht and Isaac.
says he, listening to LVB's op.133 'Grosse Fugue' at the moment... a piece I also find very hard to penetrate... :-/

Re: What are you listening to?
Sonatas 1,2 & 4... there's something refreshingly joyous about these very early, Classically styled sontas...
Re: What are you listening to?
Fergus, I was driving into Fakenham this morning, when Radio 3 were playing Strauss: An Alpine Sinfonie... all the drama toward the end. I wished the journey had been longer than 10 miles... anyway, I thought of you while it was on!
other than this, I have worked my way through Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Nos 1-19 today, and highly delightful its been. About 2 months ago, I did several traversals of the Barenboim EMI set, and its refreshingly encouraging to see how much of them I recall, when turning to the Brendel set, some time later... they are truly majestic...

Re: What are you listening to?
Thank you for the thought Jared....I am not sure about the geography of Fakenham in relation to the grandeur of the music?!?! Do you know who was performing it?Jared wrote:Fergus, I was driving into Fakenham this morning, when Radio 3 were playing Strauss: An Alpine Sinfonie... all the drama toward the end. I thought that this was lovely music making with two lovely performances. The playing is very relaxed and fows beautifully to reflect the nature of the music.

Re: What are you listening to?
Norfolk is as flat as a pancake... so it bears absolutely no relation to the music whatsoever. Neither nfortunately do I know who was performing it, because I had to get out of the car, a couple of minutes from the end. All I can say is that it was a big boned affair with lots of brass, just the way we like it... ;-))fergus wrote: Thank you for the thought Jared....I am not sure about the geography of Fakenham in relation to the grandeur of the music?!?! Re: What are you listening to?
I have not listened to this one in a while....
Well paced performances that are very well played. The sound of the brass, where used, is particularly engaging. It also has a very good recorder sound captured as well. The musical lines in No. 6 are also very clear.
