Beethoven's Violin Concerto. Very different sounding from the HvK/Mutter version that I already own which is no surprise really given the conductor and orchestra here.
This recording also contains works listed below which I'll get around to another time.
Romance for violin & orchestra No. 2 in F major, Op. 50
Romance for violin & orchestra No. 1 in G major, Op. 40
Movement for violin & orchestra in C major

Another perfect recording by Naive too.

That is still a work that I struggle with Dave. Did you enjoy the performance? Is the performance very light or does it have a reasonably big sound? How does the violin itself sound?

In comparison with the HvK/Mutter version, it is lighter alright and tempos are much more swift in places and you get those period textures as expected. While I enjoyed the performance, it's not a piece that I'm all that familiar with Fergus so if you're considering it, it's probably best to seek out some online reviews of it first.

Edit: I see that there are some in depth reviews on Amazon of this recording.

Thanks for that Dave.
I am not sure that I have come across any recommendations for the definitive version of Beethoven's Violin Concerto but if there was such a thing I certainly would be interested in it!!

Vivaldi – Music for Mandolin and Lute....

Image

The recording on this disc is superb which offers great presence to the instruments. The performances of this wonderful music are very fine indeed: the music is played with great gusto and the arrangements are very intimate which gives great clarity to the music. A stand out performance for me is the slow movement of Concerto for Viola d’Amore, Lute, Strings and Basso Continuo RV540 which is pure magic!

It has got to be the highlight of the disc in my opinion. Pure magic indeed.

I reported on the old forum that I never really got into Brahm's 3rd until I heard this version. If you liked Gardiner's previous two efforts then this belongs in your collection.
