Re: What are you listening to?
Various pieces from disc 12 of this set which includes the wonderful BMV 582, the Passacaglia und Fuge c-moll mentioned by Ciaran and Simon before.

Re: What are you listening to?
got bored of the Rugby so I decided to listen to a symphony that I have not listened to in a long time. Mahlers 7th.
Easily one of the best 7th's I've heard.

Re: What are you listening to?
Fergus, I know that you were considering Bernstein's early Mahler cycle from the 1960's that I have just being listening to today. Here is a review of this set by Tony Duggan.

Bernstein's later cycle with DG is about to be reissued again this month in a single box collection.

It was reissued a couple of years ago but the cycle was divided into 3 separate boxes of which I have the middle one. (M5, M6, M7)

Re: What are you listening to?
It sure is Seán. However if I was to recommend just one of the Bernstein cycles my vote would go to the earlier cycle. I just listened to the 3rd Symphony(one which I've had some difficulty with in the past) and it really is a great performance. If you are looking for something different in Mahler from what you have already, I'd certainly give the early cycle my top recommendation. There is enough 'newness' or 'freshness' in it to peel back a few more layers of Mahlers music. I just love the way Mahler's music never gets 'old'. There is always something new to be got out of it everytime you listen to it.Seán wrote:$54.94 is a great price for that 11 CD set.DaveF wrote:Bernstein's later cycle with DG is about to be reissued again this month in a single box collection.

That pic looks like one of the sleeves from that gigantic Mozart boxset from Brilliant Classics. I have it too and as you said I should really dip into it more often.Seán wrote:Lovely music. I should spend more time listening to Mozart!

Re: What are you listening to?
Bernstein's NY Mahler 3 is one of my favourites. For years I could only listen to it on warped badly pressed LPs, so being able to listen to it on CD now is a great luxury!DaveF wrote:I was to recommend just one of the Bernstein cycles my vote would go to the earlier cycle.
