Donizetti's Don Pasquale effervescent, full of wonderful tunes (was the beginning of Act II in Nino Rota's mind when composed the main theme for The Godfather?): a joy. Classic performance with Mirella Freni, Sesto Bruscantini, Leo Nucci and Gösta Winbergh with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Ambrosian Opera Chorus under Riccardo Muti.

I played the Solti version of this work recently and enjoyed it.
Chailly’s version is not as overtly assertive as Solti’s (as one might imagine) but it does pack the relevant punch where required; Chailly rather ponders the music, sometimes caressing it lovingly. I think that this is a lovely performance.

^^ On the way home from Lincolnshire today, I was treated to a great performance of Ilan Volkov's Bruckner 5 on Radio 3, recorded live with the BBC Scottish... it's a while since I heard the symphony, so it was especially refreshing.
