ok 2.70 is a bit of a dog, amazing how hearing can change, I know the setting that is at fault.
re-checked again just to be sure
2.7 seemed a margin better than 2.68 but well behind 2.69 sse2 intel win 8.1 - R2.69 sse2 intel (aka 2.70's a bit of a dog)
sd card player, modded soekris dac, class a lifepo4 amp or gb class a/b amp, diy open baffle speakers based on project audio mundorf trio 10's
Backing trying out 2.66 sse4 v3. This one was the 'bright' one. Think this is an excellent version that complements V2. V2 for mellow detailed full soundstage. V3 for that extra edge on detail. Still big soundstage still warm. These are my two favourite versions they cover every requirement.
On R2 install goon-heaven I am using a WTG stick no problems. Have you tried Jplay just to make sure it only relates to MQn? or lister on Total Commander just to prove music is working

No specific version required for 2012.
No tweaks yet. No Total Commander yet.
I get the windows sound test twinkly bell sounds loud & clear, LOL.
I'd hate to come across as wilfully antagonistic or disagreeable (and tomorrow I might change my mind) BUT -
I have to say 2.7 is not a dog - it is the cleanest, most musical version yet. I've been listening to some well-recorded and challenging music all evening. 2.7 puts everything in correct balance. I think it's clean enough to knock the "digital" edges off so it sounds "less" but is actually more open and it doesn't lack real transient attack. That's there in spades - just listen to "Clearing" by Fred Frith.
