Re: Gale 401a restoration
Hi Dublinia, just wondering where you got the caps for your speakers? I renovated a pair of the non chrome end Gales a couple of years ago but only replaced one resistor as it was physically damaged. Looking at the cap values 7uF is an odd one. Hi, I just had a quick look at some of the files I kep...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
Just a couple of post comparison evening thoughts Terry. It would be relatively simple to make up an extension wiring harness run through a blanking plate the exact same size as the existing XO board to allow you work on the board externally on a piecemeal basis without having to put everything back...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
Terry, Many thanks for hosting the evening and for being a very fine host at that. As Terry has already alluded to - I was really "curious" (read that as sweating it big time considering the amount of work I put into the XOs) to hear what the difference would be between the two sets of spe...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
A number of things came up late last week / early this week - necessitated attending to them today so I took the day off work to get them out of the way. All of which means I will be home earlier than originally anticipated so I'm hoping to be with you, avec 2nd pair of Gales, around 7 bells if that...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
Really looking forward to the comparisons and what they might highlight. Just the thought of seeing TWO pairs of 401s in the same room is pretty awesome. It's great that Terry & I are so proximate and can put these speakers in the same room. Like Mr Tibbs - I have a pair of stands for the Gales,...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
I don't think that they sound great at low volume levels, but at higher levels they really open up. I agree about the volume levels. I do however have a slightly different take on it. I tend to describe suitable volume levels as being "realistic" of a live session, concert, gig or whateve...

Re: Gale 401a restoration
I'm using Naim - a 12S pre and NAP160. Bought this set up along with the Gales way way back and its great to have them singing again.Terry wrote:
Great! Must have a look at that. What amp(s) are you using with them?

Re: Gale 401a restoration
Hi Terry, Nice job on the Gales. What is particularly satisfying is to see that there's more than 1 pair have now been restored in Ireland. I'm the guy in Dublin who did the restore based on Mr Tibbs's initial job. My restoration process follows on from his - pages 23 onwards. I have them back in se...
