I'm with you on this James. I would suspect that figuring out how to improve a lossy jpeg file for a photo file is not that much different than an mp3 for music.... to a computer/engineer.
But its probably only relevant in very niche situations.

I would put at about 800-900e parts in there if you were building eg 10 of them, including the chassis. Of course there are setup costs as well, we have to understand that. They use the JLsounds usb board (which is good, from memory <100e) and I cannot imagine they use anything other than a WM8804 c...

Ivor - I cannot make the batteries pay here but I have an unusual case with the heatpump. I would get most from the batteries in the winter time, but that is exactly when I wouldn't have the solar to recharge them. So I can't see the benefit.
